“… The husband and wife team Kate Jones & Stephen Gillies, fellow Chelsea Crafts Fair exhibitors, have their own hot glass studio in North Yorkshire. After graduation (Kate trained as a painter, Stephen as a glass maker at Stourbrige College of Art, ) they undertook an old – fashioned apprenticeship with glass makers in Denmark and Switzerland. Returning to the UK, they set up a studio in 1995 specialising in overlay sand – carved glass bowls. ‘We see ourselves as traditional glass makers making functional items,’ says Jones, ‘I feel there’s an honour to making a simple bowl or vase and at the same time, as professional glass makers we’re able to indulge our passion and push the creative limits. Glass is an addictive material, it gets into your blood.’ The hot glass technique may be centuries – old, but their skill is breathtaking. Resembling an opening seed, Gillies Jones’s free – blown Blue and White Water Seed Vessel was short listed for the art section of the Bombay Sapphire Prize, and they will be exhibiting five one off pieces at Chelsea…”
