Craft and Essential Luxury ?

October 1, 2009

This was the title of the debate of 25th Sept 09. Run by Arts & Business , Walpole and sponsored by American Express it was at the Sackler Centre at the V&A.

A good panel. I left the room having not said enough, but probably too much as is my way. I look forward to the next developments and the Crafted initiative being run by Arts & Business. Follow the links in green if you are curious.

The language ‘Crafts’ have used to describe itself and practice for such a long time is now suddenly of relevance (  slow,  provenance,  rarity,  connoisseurship ) . It will be interesting to see if Arts & Business does manage to link these ideas with the essence of contemporary Craft and introduce what we all do to a much larger and curious audience.

Northlands Glass

September 13, 2008

Made the pilgrimage to The Northlands Glass Conference this year.

The location at Lybster on the NE coast, nearly at the very top of Scotland dictates a long journey which requires a big effort to arrange and make the time to visit.

This somehow makes for a relatively small group of very keen interesting visitors. What pulls people in are the great speakers, good company and interesting conversations over dinner. Northlands really is a special place in many ways. It brings together a community of artists, skilled glass makers, academics, curators, writers and collectors, from both sides of the pond and throws everybody into the mix . Highly stimulating debates, great examinations on topics outside glass and from the great and good of glass which all feed back into new thinking and awareness of what we all do. Looking forward to next year already.

Really cannot recommend this conference enough.
